SEED Initiave at YCK
by volunteers Bakri Imaan Adam and Herleena Pahlavy
Our Supporting Early Education Development or SEED program. SEED is our initiative to enhance YCK's children's mind and self development through fun activities and promote critical thinking. Our objective is to give a better childhood to them to ensure a better future ahead of them.
The founders or inspirers, as we call ourselves came with this idea after we see the potential help we could offer. For your information, SEED is founded by myself and a friend, Herleena. Both of us have had own small scale experience volunteering here prior to SEED. SEED class is a structured class with module based on 4 different aspect: knowledge based, critical thinking based, skill based and talent based. Our main reference for the class is a book by Lawrence E Shapiro titled : 101 ways to teach children social skills.
"We had done few classes before and we realized there's big potential in the kids. We are happy to see their progress as they express their talent and skills. We are actually surprised with what they've showed us. One important lesson we've learned is all the kids have hidden talent, some of them are quite smart and it is our responsibility to bring the best out of them. A bunch of them are a bit naughty and out of control at times, but we regard them as a challenge. A few of them are influenced by their surroundings and it reflects in their attitude. However, with correct approach they are easily molded into a better person. Our ultimate dream is to ensure they see the world differently which is their future is not determine by who their parents are, how they lived in the past or where they were born at.
Honestly, we feel our lives are meaningless and unfulfilled without contributing back to the society. As in why we founded SEED, we believe that YCK is the best platform for us to give back and this is the least that we can do to guarantee a better future for them which is through education.
We also hope by interacting closely with them, we could build a relationship with trust and pure love. Thus they
have more reasons to motivate themselves and move on with a better life.
